How can I cope with feeling isolated and distant by not being able to see any of my friends?

The COVID-19 global pandemic has had a tremendous effect on everyone; we are all finding ourselves in uncertain and strange realities. As a result, feeling isolated and distant from our loved ones is very common and justifiable.

It is important to feel connected and supported during these difficult times, which is why I encourage staying in touch with friends and family through phone calls. I understand this isn’t the same as being able to spend time with your friends in person, but it is the best option under these circumstances. Arranging a phone/video call with your friend group will allow you to connect with your friends; communicate how you are feeling; and share your experiences. Talking and hopefully laughing will be beneficial in helping you feel less isolated and distant.

Personally, seeking a daily purpose has helped me feel less isolated and distant from my friends. The daily purpose could range from a variety of different goals which don’t necessarily have to be anything major. A few of my daily purposes throughout this quarantine have been engaging in meditation, reading for 20 minutes, taking a walk outside, baking, painting, working out, and watching my favourite shows. It is important to take time out of your day to relax and engage in activities you enjoy.

The circumstances we currently find ourselves in won’t last forever, even though it feels that way right now. Soon, we will all be able to connect with our friends and family in person but until then, it is important that we not only socially distance ourselves for the safety of everyone, but also take care of our physical and mental well-being.
