Improving your relationship with your parents is very important and can be very difficult to do. Steps you can take towards improvement in your relationship is to discover things you have in common; stop desiring non-stop validation from your parents; accept them for who they are; do not resurface past problems and fights; and, remember it is okay to disagree with them. You need to communicate with your parents in order to develop a healthy relationship, which can be very hard. In order to develop those communication skills, think of some interests you have in common and remember that it is okay to not agree with them. It is very important to understand that you have to accept them for who they are; they don’t think the same way you do and might not fully understand how you feel. If it helps, sit down and talk to them, set boundaries, and make sure you are available for them. Listen to one another with empathy. Try to avoid bringing up past conflicts with them. Everyone has regrets and grows from their mistakes, and bringing up the past does not do good in many situations.

Lastly, stop searching for constant approval from your parents, it does neither party any good. Approval from your parents shouldn’t be sought for, especially when you do not agree with them. Learn to accept your differences and similarities. Remember, it is always okay to find support and be the parent you wish you had.
